Location
We are conveniently situated on a working
smallholding six miles to the west of Taunton just off the
B3227. We have fine views of the Blackdown and Quantock
Hills as well as the foothills of Exmore. Guests are welcome
to join in the feeding and care of the ducks -
and visit the sheep when they are grazing locally.
Hillcommon has a pub which
serves good food and is within walking distance of your
holiday home: nearby Oake has a post office and general
shop. Wiveliscombe has an excellent butcher with
complementary delicatessen, chemist and small supermarkets
(which are open into the evening). Taunton has a full range
of supermarkets and a variety of smaller shops as well as a
good representation of the national chain stores.
This is an farming area, but is very well
served with footpaths which can provide many different
walks, particularly for dog owners. We are all asked to
respect the countryside at all times, with particular regard
to local farmers and their livestock and crops. You are most
welcome to use our grounds to exercise your pets but please
keep dogs on a lead when we have our sheep grazing nearby.
Our visitors have found this a good base
for exploring both the north and south coasts, with easy
access to the Quantock Hills and Exmore. Garden enthusiasts can visit
Hestercombe House as well as National Trust
properties at Knights Hayes, Killerton and East Lambrook,
and RHS Rosemoor in north Devon.
There is a regular bus service (Taunton to
Wiveliscombe - with some buses going as far as Barnstable)
stopping at the end of the drive (40 metres), but a car is
essential to enjoy the area to the full.
